Ceylon FT: The historic Marketing vs Finance debate at the ‘Bring Your Fight to the Forum’ on Wednesday (5) saw the competitors engage in intense debate, but on occasion they did reach common consensus that both disciplines were critical to an organization’s success and should be respected.
The Finance Team comprised Dilshan Rodrigo, Chief Operating Officer Hatton National Bank; Chandrin Fernando, Chief Financial Officer Arpico Finance Company PLC and Melanie Kanaka, Head of Finance and Administration World Bank – Sri Lanka and Maldives.
The Marketing Team comprised Srikanth Selladurai, Chief Marketing Officer Goodhope Asia Holdings – India and Malaysia; Imal Fonseka, Chief Executive Officer Ceylon Biscuits Limited and Tharaka Ranwala, Deputy General Manager Sampath Bank PLC.
Both teams engaged in intense, nuanced debate laced with thought-provoking jokes, interesting anecdotes, ratios, facts and figures.
But on more than one occasion, the speakers themselves recognized the importance of the other profession and encouraged young people to follow both CIM and CIMA in order to broaden their knowledge and better equip them for the future.
Top industrialist and Chairman of NDB Bank PLC, United Motors PLC and Watawala Plantations PLC Sunil Wijesinha delivering his comments at the end.of the debate said, aspiring CEOs should be versed in an array of disciplines in order to be successful.
He said disciplines such as finance, marketing, human resources, law and engineering were all important cogs in an successful organization.
“Apple would not have been successful if not for the engineers who created the devices. So my advice to aspiring CEOs is this; be versed in a number of disciplines, this is what the future requires,” Wijesinha said, after ‘Bring Your Fight to the Forum’ was organized by the Colombo University MBA Alumni Association in association with Ceylon Today and News 1st.
